What exactly is Zwift?

Zwift is a popular piece of software among athletes, particularly those interested in cycling, running, and triathlons.

It’s not your typical fitness trainer; instead, it’s more of a game that makes your workouts more fun and competitive.

It was founded in 2014 and is owned by Zwift Inc, a California-based company.

The app itself was released later that year, albeit as an early version, and was eventually replaced by a full paid version the following year.

Zwift connects through Bluetooth or ANT+, enabling you to bike and run in a virtual environment.

There are a few maps to select from here, depending on your preferred surrounds or landscape.

From the comfort of your own home, you may ride alone, compete in races against other gamers across the globe, or participate in groups.

It keeps track of your workouts and transforms them into speed and power. You may vary the resistance levels to make the workouts more difficult depending on what additional equipment you use.

Zwift was originally exclusively accessible for PCs, but it is now available on Android, iOS, and a variety of Linux-based systems.

You may also send messages to other users or wave to them as if you were in the real world.

Even on a low-budget setup, Zwift provides a lot of functionality, and if you can buy a smart trainer or anything similar, all the better.

You may sign up for a free trial for the first seven days and then pay $14.99 per month for a membership.

Minimum & Recommended System Requirements for Zwift

Zwift is a training program or game that can be played on low-powered computers, but the experience will be worse.

For example, the official recommendations call for an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, Intel 4000 Graphics, and 8 GB of RAM, among other things.

Those who want greater real-time performance, such as running the program at 1080p or higher resolutions, will require a Core i7 or Ryzen processor, as well as 4-6 GB of dedicated graphics memory.

Because the RAM use in this instance is still a little more than 8 GB, a computer system with 16 GB of memory should enough.

Zwift doesn’t take up a lot of space, thus a good 256-512 GB SSD should enough in most cases, depending on other storage requirements. However, an SSD should always take precedence over a mechanical disk.

For further clarification, have a look at our system suggestions.

Minimum System Requirements: Intel Core i5 / AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or higher CPU; 8 GB or more RAM; 2 GB dedicated GPU such as NVIDIA MX 130 or better; 256 GB or larger SSD

AMD Ryzen 7 or Intel Core i7 processor 12 GB or more RAM GTX 1650 or better GPU 500 GB or larger SSD Recommended System Requirements: AMD Ryzen 7 or Intel Core i7 processor 12 GB or more RAM GTX 1650 or better GPU 500 GB or larger SSD

  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor
  • NVIDIA GTX 1650 Super graphics
  • Windows 10 Home is the operating system.
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 500 GB SSD storage

Pros

  • The setup is ideal for using with Zwift.
  • Compact Dimensions
  • There is no pre-installed bloatware.

Cons

  • There isn’t a USB Type-C port on this device.
  • Customer service isn’t great.
  • Minor hardware problems do occur from time to time.

If you were to ask for a single PC that was most likely designed for usage with Zwift or a similar program, this would be it.

The SkyTech Chronos Mini Gaming PC provides the perfect performance and size for you to stay in shape while still enjoying your favorite games.

In this price range, there were a few other options, but this desktop seems to be the best of them.

This has all of the performance that a committed Zwift user needs while still being minimal in size.

This version of the SkyTech Chronos Mini Gaming PC has a Ryzen 5 CPU and a GTX 1650 Super GPU with 4 GB of video RAM, among other features.

This model comes with 16GB of system memory and a 500GB Solid State Drive.

The RAM onboard is more than enough for running Zwift, and you won’t need to increase it if you want to multitask while it’s running.

However, upgrades should be simple since there is ample room inside and the PSU has enough power for a higher GPU by default.

And, just to make sure your pain cave doesn’t become too dull, there’s RGB lighting on this as well. Take a look at the Skytech Chronos Review.

Runner-up: TG01 HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop

1628503413_46_5-Best-Desktops-for-Zwift-2021

HP Pavilion TG01

Bottom Line: This HP desktop is a cheap desktop that can run Zwift when you’re in the mood to exercise for a few hours. Whether you’re doing a solitary session or going on an online journey with people from all over the globe, the desktop provides excellent visuals and performance that you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home.

Characteristics:

  • Intel Core i5-10400F processor
  • NVIDIA GTX 1650 graphics card
  • Windows 10 is the operating system.
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 256 GB SSD storage

Pros

  • Good specifications
  • Features that provide good connection
  • a good storage arrangement

Cons

  • The expansion’s restricted breadth
  • At times, fans may be very obnoxious.
  • Upgrades need the use of tools.

Here’s a gaming desktop that many of you may be acquainted with when it comes to small and budget-friendly gaming desktops.

Although the HP Pavilion Gaming PC lacks dazzling RGB lighting and an out-of-this-world appearance, it nevertheless attracts attention.

Although there are Intel alternatives available, this is the Intel version of the PC.

So you’re looking at a Core i5 CPU with 6 cores and 12 threads with a maximum turbo clock of 4.3 GHz.

If you use Zwift at moderate to high settings, you should have no problems at all.

Then there’s the GTX 1650 GPU, which has enough VRAM to make the graphics pleasant as well. The overall experience would be fantastic, apart from small delays and stutters in busy areas on a map.

The positive things continue in the RAM and Storage area, with 8 GB of memory and a 256 GB SSD on board.

The same can be said regarding connection, with all of the essential ports as well as built-in WiFi and Bluetooth.

3. ROG Strix GL10DH from Asus — For the Live Streamer Who Wants to Stay Fit As Well

1628503414_46_5-Best-Desktops-for-Zwift-2021

Asus ROG Strix GL10DH

Bottom Line: With the Asus GL10DH, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a casual Live Streamer or want to do so on a regular basis. In any case, it has the ability to offer a seamless online experience at all times. This is one very helpful and budget-friendly desktop, whether it’s for Zwift or any other game.

Characteristics:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 3700X processor
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics
  • Windows 10 Home is the operating system.
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 512 GB SSD storage

Pros

  • Detailed specifications
  • Size is small.
  • The cost is reasonable.

Cons

  • Upgrading to a more powerful GPU may be difficult.
  • Occasionally, there are problems with the heating.
  • Frequently unavailable

Following that is the Asus GL10DH, which is also a good option if you’re looking for a low-cost desktop to run Zwift, broadcast your workouts, make movies about it, and so forth.

Not only that, but it’s also very little, so keeping it in your Zwift “pain cave” should be no issue.

A Ryzen 7 3700X CPU with 8 cores and a maximum clock rate of 4.4 GHz powers this desktop version. You receive 16 gigabytes of RAM, which may be expanded if necessary.

If you’re looking for a streaming rig as well as gaming or Zwift performance, this is a great option. You may also play the game at its most demanding settings.

The rig, which features a GTX 1660 Ti GPU, not only boasts outstanding CPU speed, but it also has very competitive graphics performance.

The GL10DH comes with a 512 GB SSD, which seems to be plenty for the time being. There are also open spaces for adding SSD or HDD storage.

You won’t be disappointed in terms of connectivity, however, since there are plenty of USB connections and a Gigabit Ethernet connector for adding a fast internet connection.

The desktop also comes in a different version with a stronger RTX 2070 Super video card, but this isn’t required for Zwift. Check out our review of the Asus ROG Strix GL10DH.

4. Apple Mac Mini: The Perfect NUC or Apple TV Substitute

1628503415_214_5-Best-Desktops-for-Zwift-2021

Apple Mac

Bottom Line: Despite being more costly than an Apple TV, the M1 Mac Minis provide a lot of value when it comes to running Zwift. The M1 processor does more than simply run it; it enables the user to enjoy the complete experience, and its small size makes it easy to store in your training area.

Characteristics:

  • M1 Silicon Chip Processor
  • Apple M1 Graphics were used for the graphics.
  • Macintosh Operating System
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 256 GB SSD storage

Pros

  • Zwift is well optimized for Mac OS.
  • The size is very tiny.
  • There’s a lot of RAM and storage to choose from.

Cons

  • It’s a little more costly than other Mini PCs.
  • The upgrade’s restricted scope
  • There were additional ports on the Intel variants.

The Apple Mac Mini is the ideal desktop for running Zwift if you want a smaller form factor.

This is the latest M1 version, and considering the duties at hand, this gadget is a great match for the job.

Unlike the other desktops on our list, the Mac Mini takes up a fraction of the area on your desk and may be almost invisible if properly placed.

These newest ones are even smaller than the ones that come with Intel CPUs, which is to your benefit.

The specifications include an Apple-designed 8-core M1 silicon CPU with an integrated graphics unit, 16 gigabytes of RAM, and SSD storage.

While a standard-sized GPU may not fit, the graphics on these CPUs are sufficient for even the most intensive tasks.

There are plenty of connections, including USB 4 ports, and it also has WIFI 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, so you won’t be concerned about connectivity.

The Mac Mini’s tiny size, along with all of the capabilities it has, makes a compelling case for it, and the price tag is no longer an issue.

This is an excellent alternative to explore for individuals who have the requirements. Check out our review of the Apple Mac Mini Desktop.

Acer Aspire C27-962-UA91 AIO Desktop – Good Value

1628503417_518_5-Best-Desktops-for-Zwift-2021

Acer Aspire C27-962-UA91 AIO

This 27-inch desktop from Acer defies the preconceptions surrounding All-in-One computers. The desktop offers it everything, from good display quality to a private camera and the strong performance you’ll need to utilize Zwift. And its inherent space-saving characteristics will be put to good use right away.

Characteristics:

  • Intel Core i5-1035G1 processor
  • NVIDIA GeForce MX 130 graphics
  • Windows 10 Home is the operating system.
  • 12 GB RAM
  • 512 GB SSD storage

Pros

  • Excellent specifications
  • For operating Zwift, you’ll need a display that’s big enough.
  • Access to wireless peripherals is provided.

Cons

  • Upgradeability is limited.
  • Not the most up-to-date connection options
  • The display can’t be moved up or down.

Zwift necessitates the usage of a screen, regardless of its size or resolution.

In a scenario like this, an All-in-One desktop like the Acer Aspire C27 comes in useful since it includes one, which in this instance is an FHD screen.

A Core i5 CPU with 4 cores and 8 threads, intended for mobile devices like this one, is integrated into the design.

It uses less power than specialized desktop CPUs and has a max frequency of 3.6 GHz, which is sufficient for running Zwift.

The AIO also comes with 12 GB of RAM and an NVIDIA MX 130 graphics card, which should be plenty for casual software use.

At most, you should be able to run Zwift in 720p or 1080p resolution.

The former resolution should easily offer about 60 frames per second (fps) without too many delays or stutters, while the latter would linger around 40-50 fps.

Furthermore, the display’s narrow bezels perform as well as a dedicated monitor.

You also get built-in WIFI and Bluetooth, so you can link any other wireless training equipment you have.

Furthermore, since it is an AIO, it eliminates the need for wires, resulting in a tidy setup. Acer Aspire C27-962-UA91 AIO Review may be found here.

How Do I Pick the Right Desktop for Zwift?

It’s critical to choose the device on which Zwift will operate before dedicating an entire room to training and investing money or effort in it.

The options are many, and even a smartphone will suffice, but you will not be receiving the whole experience.

The good news is that you won’t have to spend a fortune on a flashing RGB gaming desktop or top-of-the-line technology.

At least to begin with, a basic setup with a well configured desktop is sufficient.

Zwift uses approximately the same amount of system resources as an entry-level game at its maximum settings.

But, since not everyone in this room is a gamer, we’ll go over topics in more depth.

With a few smart decisions, you’ll be able to train the way you want while still saving money.

However, we will be discussing the desktop that you may utilize, as well as some other peripherals that you will need.

Budget

Many people opt to spend a lot of money on exercise equipment, trainers, and other related items, while others start modestly. We don’t know which of these you are, but we can assist you in any situation.

To be honest, any type of configuration that you may have for Zwift serves the same function, but as with other things, paying extra gives you with more options and advantages.

For example, a smart training bike offers you greater control over the amount of resistance you want to exercise with in Zwift.

Add a large display and a few more items, and you’ve got yourself the ideal setup.

While that may seem appealing, few people could really afford it. Don’t worry; all you need is a bike, a pair of rollers, a smartphone or iPad, and a speed sensor to get started with Zwift.

Adding a desktop to a low-end system like this is a good upgrade, and although we can’t tell you how much the entire setup will cost, we can help you figure out how much the desktop will cost.

The best option is to get a good mid-range desktop, which should cost between $700 to $1200.

There’s no sense in spending more money when a PC can only accomplish so much. And you may use that money towards other aspects of your Zwift setup.

You may as well save money, because an entry-level PC, whether gaming or not, can run Zwift well in certain instances.

If you don’t want to spend extra, you’ll have to tone down the visuals, but it’s worth it.

OS

At least when it comes to popular PCs, the operating system of choice is either Mac or Windows. So, as long as your Mac or Windows machine isn’t too old, you may use it for Zwift.

What counts is whether or not you have a choice and whether or not you have a budget. We wouldn’t recommend purchasing an iMac just for the purpose of training on Zoom.

However, if you have additional tasks that would benefit the Mac OS or a Mac desktop in general, you should definitely get one.

Some Mac users choose to utilize an Apple TV gadget, which has Bluetooth capabilities and allows users to watch traditional television.

Others just purchase an iPhone, iPad, or other Android smartphone or tablet, but this is unrelated to our topic.

Factor of Form

The amount you spend makes a significant difference in the form factor of the desktop, which may have a little impact on Zwift performance.

This is one of those situations when a big desktop with heavy-weight components won’t help, and even an SFF desktop with the appropriate components should allow you to train intensely without having to wait for the desktop to complete processing.

Another factor that influences the size of your desktop is the size of the training area, or “pain cave,” as it is often referred to.

You’d already have a bike, a stand, and other training equipment, so a large desktop would be more inconvenient.

While it’s unlikely, but not impossible, that you’ll utilize the same space for other tasks on the desktop, a mid-tower is a good choice.

A larger cabinet is also the best option if you play games or utilize components that need more room within the chassis.

So, in general, you can get by with any smaller form factor, but a full tower desktop may be purchased if you have the funds and room.

Processor

Zwift is similar to any other game in that the CPU has a significant impact on how well it runs on your desktop.

However, since it isn’t a resource-intensive game, you won’t need to purchase the quickest CPU available; a mid-range processor should enough for a pleasant experience.

A quad-core CPU, such as the Core i3-9100F or the Ryzen 3 3100, is the lowest you can go, and we wouldn’t recommend it.

Also, they are only useful if you don’t have anything else on your desktop except running Zwift.

So, the highest clock rate a CPU can reach, which makes the whole process smoother and quicker, is what helps this program or game the most.

You may depend on the basic turbo-boosting that nearly every CPU nowadays has, and you won’t need to overclock the system.

However, unless you’re broadcasting your workout, you shouldn’t be worried about having too many cores.

Many artists use Zwift to livestream their work, and if you’re one of them, keep an eye on the amount of cores you’re receiving.

If you’re a power user, you’ll want at least 6 cores on your desktop’s CPU.

This isn’t a Zwift requirement; most streamers have a CPU with a comparable, if not higher, core count. Because activities like livestreaming and video editing are time-consuming.

Graphics

The sceneries and graphics on Zwift are very realistic, and according to the official guidelines, you’ll need at least a 2 GB video card to have a good time.

In fact, integrated graphics may be sufficient, but mid-range GPUs may be required depending on use.

It all depends on how much money you have and what type of experience you want.

Those who want to play at 25-30 frames per second may do so without a dedicated video card, while those who want to play at 4K will require at least a 6 GB GPU.

Even if frame rates or display resolution have nothing to do with your fitness, many people choose higher graphics just because they can.

Some AMD APUs have greater graphics integration than Intel CPUs, and they may be an excellent choice for budget consumers.

One of these APUs wouldn’t be too expensive, and the graphics would still be good enough for Zwift to operate well, although with a few missed frames.

If you’re thinking about getting dedicated graphics, NVIDIA is a better option than AMD.

Because Zwift utilizes OpenGL, it has been discovered that the performance of GPUs from the latter brand in this program is inferior to that of the former.

Keeping this in mind, as you may have seen, we have provided some options in the list above.

So, if you’re on a budget and want a decent enough experience, a 2-3 GB video card would suffice.

A GTX 1050 Ti or GTX 1650 (the normal, Super, and Ti versions, the latter one being for laptops only) should suffice for somewhat more demanding tasks.

An RTX 2060 or GTX 1660 Ti would be even better, since these cards also have VR support, making your workouts much more enjoyable. Above this threshold, however, there are no greater returns.

Because Zwift does not currently support ray-tracing, even a high-end RTX GPU will not be able to provide improved graphics.

RAM

A dedicated GPU can handle graphics better because to its VRAM, but system memory is required for the CPU and other non-graphics activities.

While you’re sweating on your bike, without enough system memory, the CPU will be sweating as well while executing the different programs, which isn’t ideal.

But, because Zwift doesn’t require a powerful gaming PC, I wouldn’t be too concerned. A modest 8+ GB of RAM should enough for the time being and in the future.

You may add some additional components and increase the RAM to 16 GB, but that’s all.

When participating in group rides or when there are too many cyclists in your vicinity, you’ll need more RAM.

Although you’d see some latency regardless of how much RAM you put in, adding additional RAM may assist the CPU navigate clear of such tight spots.

This also applies to the CPU and GPU, therefore we wouldn’t recommend going overboard since the hardware can only accomplish so much.

Storage

Then there’s storage, and the storage disk you choose may help this program operate quicker on your desktop to some degree.

While the storage drive may not play as important a role as other components, it can nonetheless make a difference.

So, how does one put it to use? Simply said, an SSD is the way to go. While it is impossible to say that every Zwift user in the globe utilizes an SSD, those who do will undoubtedly notice improved performance.

A struggling Zwift’s performance may frequently be improved with an SSD update, which is considerably less expensive than upgrading any other component of their PC.

However, SSDs may be very costly in terms of storage devices, and many people choose SATA SSDs, which aren’t as fast as PCIe SSDs but are much less expensive. At the very least, they are superior than conventional hard disks.

Depending on what else you do on your desktop, you’ll need to choose one or more storage disks.

Connectivity

While many items on Zwift depend on wireless connectivity, there are still certain things that need the standard ports and slots found on every desktop.

Some of them include audio connections for connecting speakers or video ports for connecting displays or a virtual reality headset.

What’s most essential for you is an Internet connection, and although the game can be played offline once you log in, you’ll need to be online the majority of the time.

To minimize the amount of wires laying around, you may utilize WIFI or the Ethernet connection on the desktop.

However, since the transfer of fitness data is critical, you won’t be able to utilize Zwift for its original function without Bluetooth or an ANT+ connection.

In most cases, a new desktop should come with built-in Bluetooth, but if it doesn’t, be sure you have the option to install one later.

Some smart bikes already have ANT+ or Bluetooth, and in some cases, both.

All you’ll need is an ANT+ dongle and a USB extension cable to attach it to a free USB port on your desktop.

Accessories

Even though you’ll be on your treadmill or training cycle the most of the time while utilizing Zwift, it wouldn’t be fair to skimp on the accessories.

A few obvious items, related to the desktop you’ve selected, would be required.

The first is a monitor, which will have the most impact on the entire experience.

At this stage, the size and resolution of the monitor will be mainly determined by the amount of free space you have and the other tasks you perform. A 24-28′′ Full HD monitor is more than adequate for Zwift.

It’s only logical that you’d purchase a keyboard, mouse, and speakers in addition to the display. The quality of them is entirely up to you, depending on your budget.

Zwift now utilizes Bluetooth or ANT+, with the latter requiring a separate adapter, as previously stated. Some devices already have it, but in most instances, it must be purchased separately.

Another item you could get is a virtual reality headset, which would make your Zwift experience even more realistic.

When you utilize the VR capabilities available, your training session will be very fun as long as you don’t accidentally run off the treadmill.
