You're Next

In a genre that is flooded with remakes and ‘continuations’ (yes, I’m looking at you PARANORMAL ACTIVITY franchise!), it’s very refreshing to see a unique take on an existing staple. With YOU’RE NEXT, director Adam Wingard turns the home-invasion sub-genre on its ear and takes the whole concept in a completely different direction. The result is a well-made and very satisfying trek into terror.

If you are not familiar with YOU’RE NEXT, here is the plot synopsis courtesy of Lionsgate:

Aubrey and Paul Davison decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary by inviting their four children and their significant others to a family reunion at their remote and slightly rundown weekend estate. But the family reunion goes awry when their home comes under siege by a mask-wearing team of crossbow-bearing assailants. The family has no idea who’s attacking them, why they’re under attack, or if the attackers are inside or outside the cavernous, creaking house. All they know for certain is that nobody is safe.

The home-invasion idea is one that truly terrifies me, probably because it actually happens in real life. Whereas most slasher-flicks are a bit on the unrealistic side, home-invasion films like THE STRANGERS are based on events that can and do make headlines every week. This context is what makes YOU’RE NEXT such a horrifying premise.

YOU’RE NEXT is shot well and looks excellent onscreen. The production value looks high, and it seems no expense was spared to make this film realistic.

I am particularly impressed with the special effects. There’s plenty of gory fun to go around, and it is all practical; there’s no CG here! The Making Of documentary in the Special Features reiterates this a couple of times, and the efforts of the special effects team are well worth it. The carnage looks great, which only enhances the terror presented onscreen.

The acting in YOU’RE NEXT is very good as well. Beautiful and talented Australian actress Sharni Vinson heads a stellar cast that also includes screen veteran Rob Moran and horror icon Barbara Crampton. The actors mesh well and convey a realistic screen presence as a whole.

YOU’RE NEXT is a hell of a horror thriller, and I highly suggest giving it a look. The film has garnered accolades from many critics and film festivals alike, so that should tell you something. The film hits store shelves tomorrow, so make a note.
